"I am the oldest of four children, and my three younger sibilings all have learning disorders. Two of them have ADD and one has ADHD, one has OCD, Aspergers Syndrome and Auditory Deficit Perception in addition to ADD and the other is Bi-Polar in addition to having ADHD. Growing up around these disorders has given me insight as to how special needs children think, process information and learn, allowing me to develop an approach in order to teach them. I am very passionate about teaching swimmers who have these and any other differences. I say differences because I don't believe any of the above listed to be disabilities, they are like any other obstacle that must be overcome and handled in order to learn and grow and I have seen many swimmers overcome said obstacles in a positive manner. In addition to growing up with sibilings with differences, I was also raised around those with physical handicaps. My mother is a nurse administrator and works with those who are physically handicaped; and as a child, I would go to work with her and help the clients with various tasks and spend my day talking and hanging out with them." Kendra Messer For many special needs swimmers, the water is a therapeutic and comforting place. And with the pool being heated to more than 90 degrees, the warm water is not only an ideal learning enviroment, it also creates a relaxing and calming experience. Swimming helps to create an awareness of body through fluid movement, while tuning both fine motor skills and promoting development of major muscle groups. Swimming plays an integral role in building both confidence and a healthy respect for water, and is especially important for those whose strengths do not lie in being aware of their surroundings. Little Swimmers developmental swim program uses water education to develop water safety and swimming skills, improve motor coordination and also focuses on developing self-confidence and self-esteem. Our program is based on using repetative skills to build upon your child's strengths and is customized for each child's emotional and developmental abilities.
